The great and Mythical Profit Sharing

Why do employers even bring it up? Every employer I've had braggs about and talks-up profit sharing. In more than 30 years, I've seen exactly two profit sharing checks. I specifically ask, "profit sharing programs are great, but do they actually pay out?"

Their reply is always affirmative.

I'm mostly mad at myself, because sometimes I believe them, and I should know better.
