Loving a Mama’s Boy When His Family Will Never Love You Back
Being in love with a “mama’s boy” feels like running a race you never agreed to.. one you can’t win, no matter how hard you try. You don’t just date him. You date his family, his mother most of all.. whether they want you there or not. And in my case? They didn’t.
It starts small.. the sarcastic remarks at dinner, the “harmless” jokes that sting a little too much. “You’re so independent, aren’t you? Not every man likes that,” or “He always liked girls who cooked more.” Words that sound polite enough to outsiders but hit like tiny blades when you’re the target.
What hurts more than their comments is his silence. The way he just sits there when I’m judged for how I dress or compared to his ex.. as if defending me would somehow betray his mother. I realized that love shouldn’t mean constantly proving your worth to people who never wanted to see it.
After a while, I caught myself wondering: am I really in a relationship, or just auditioning for one? It’s not just love anymore.. it’s politics, expectations, and feeling like you’ll always be “too much” or “not enough.”
That’s when I learned something important: love shouldn’t make you feel small. Sometimes, you need to step back, take a breath, and remember there’s a world beyond this kind of hurt. A space where you can meet people who see you, value you, and actually have room for you in their lives.. like on Doublelist, where connections start from honesty, not family approval.
Because if he can’t choose you.. not just privately, but proudly.. maybe it’s time to choose yourself instead.
