Dog Death

A little bit of context. My 15-year-old miniature dachshund passed away in my arms early Wednesday morning, the 22nd. She had began having soft stool around the 14th or 15th of this month, which later turned into full-blown, gassy, liquid diarrhea a few days after. I've had pets my whole life, and would be bankrupt if I rushed them to the vet every time after a little diarrhea. So over the next few days, I tried all of the home remedies; withdrawing food, bland diet, small amount of pumpkin... Etc. Her diarrhea persisted, so l took her to an emergency vet, where they decided that, since her vitals were fine, and she was still wanting to eat, play, and be active, they prescribed her an anabiotic (Metronidazole) to treat the colitis. She was fine, except she had diarrhea. She was dead, three days later. My other dog began having bouts of diarrhea on the 21st. By the 22nd, concerned that he was now going to die, I took him to a different vet, where they ran a stool sample and found that he had Clostridium perfringens bacteria. Treated him with a different anabiotic (Tylosin powder) and he is more or less back to normal.

The only thing I did different was give them Nature's Recipe pet food, just prior to her producing soft stool. Im curious to know if anyone else out there has recently given this food to their dog, and their dog started having diarrhea? I got the package of food from Chewy on the 10th, and gave them each the food on the 12th. This is the only new thing I introduced (although they have eaten it in the past with no issues). The bacteria has an incubation period of 6-24 hours, so the timeline seems to align.

I have already placed a call into Nature's Recipe to see if there have been any other reports of contamination. The product was the 12 pack of the multi-flavor Grain Free (Chicken and Lamb, Chicken and Turkey, and Chicken and Beef) saucy, stew like 2.75 ounce containers. I would use this as a topper, and have given both my dogs this product in the past with no issues. They hadn't had it for awhile (it was on autoship from Chewy), and I had only reintroduced it back onto their food around the 12th/13th. The illnesses began on the 14th.

Please be kind. I just lost my best friend of 15 years. And I’m trying to advocate for her, and others this could potentially harm, by investigating how she could’ve been exposed to this.
