Road trip MA -> FL and back

Planning a road trip from Boston area to Florida and back mid to late December with my 7yo. Looking for any suggestions on stops on the way to and or from that could be fun!

I thought about NYC, maybe tree houses in Tennessee and maybe outer banks.

Thanks
