Learning tips

Hello all, I'm new to migaku and I'm trying to learn Japanese and I'm have a hard time memorizing the fundamentals. Iv also got some learning books for writing but some characters are just not sticking. I can recognize characters but can't remember what they mean. Is there any tips I could use that would help?
