Frustrated Little Rant
Just feeling a little frustrated with religion today and thought I would rant a little. Probably nothing you haven't heard before, but I need to get it out. Thanks everyone for being an outlet!
If you look at how the Bible was written (and many other holy books), those origins are problematic at best. Thousands of years ago, people started talking about hearing voices, talking to burning bushes, hearing the "will of god", and telling their friends and family. If someone came up to us today and told us that they heard a voice telling them to do something, we would assume they were either mentally ill (possibly with schizophrenia), they took some hallucinogenic drug (maybe some LSD or magic mushrooms), or possibly that they are lying to us in an attempt to manipulate us.
Yet people are willing to accept that multiple people thousands of years ago heard the "voice of god" and they accept that these people were not hallucinating or lying about it. We are expected to just accept that one small group of special people in a corner of the world thousands of years ago were able to talk to god. We are also expected to accept that this one group was right and all other groups with similar, but different experiences were wrong. That this god just decided to stop talking to us in the modern day for no particular reason or that only a chosen few, who are high up in the church can hear his voice.
When a new group forms with a similar premise, they are identified as a cult and looked down upon. But the cults that has survived for over 2000 years has somehow gained legitimacy in the minds of people. The discussion of a flood that never happened and the very impossible act of saving "two of every animal" doesn't make people question it's legitimacy. Who cares that we have all kinds of animals all across the world. One man managed to gather them all and then put them back where they belong. And what did they eat during and after the flood? That is a minor unimportant detail. Minimum viable population numbers being much more than 2? Again, not important.
Then you add that the Bibles encouragement of slavery, genocide, incest, treating women as property, and use of capital punishment doesn't bother followers of the faith, even if they agree that these acts are reprehensible (yes, I know my list is far from complete). If Christians lives as the old estimate tells them to, live would be very different and quite horrible. No one would want to live how god wants us to as layed out in the old estimate.
The fact that god was supposed to have turned people into pillars of salt, sent an angel to murder children, made a bet with the devil where he ruined his favorite man's life, flooded the world to kill off everyone except one single family, killed a man for not making his dead brothers widow pregnant, and brought famine, plagues, drought, swarms of locusts, and other horrible things when he gets angry. But he did no such thing during the holocaust of WW2 when decendant of his chosen people were systematically being killed? And yet people still accept that he is real and loving? They insist that he is a good god? And they call themselves "god fearing" like that is a good thing?
You can argue with a theist, point out all these glaring problems with their holy book, and yet they still insist on believing. It feel like kids who see their parents filling their stocking on Christmas eve, but still insist that Santa Clause is real. It should be EASY to prove that their religion is a lie, but still it persists! What is wrong with people??? Why do they insist on avoiding reason and ignoring evidence? (Rhetorical questions, but feel free to answer it)
