My personal issues with season 4 and the direction of the show

Spoiler💬 Discussion 💬

This is my first post on here in a little nervous but:

Season 4 really wasn’t my favorite season. There were a lot I found pretty negative about it. For some positives I did enjoy the pilot episode where it showed how they navigated Hollywood and I did like some of the clues that get had to solve involving the whole bones in furnace thing. As for things I didn’t like I was kind of put off by them saying helga was the “bad kind of weirdo” after being insinuated that she had mental issues prior in the conversation. Obviously I know that the helga thing was a cover up but it’s still kind of a weird excuse to make and kind of iffy. I also wasn’t particularly a fan of the humor this season with the actor characters getting a bit grating for me and I also wasn’t super fond of the Melissa Mcarthy episode tbh. I wasn’t a fan of the Loretta affair arc either I don’t appreciate how all of the conflict regarding it is just “Oh no, Loretta might leave me for her co star because he has a huge crotch” and never addresses that Loretta would be the issue in that situation for cheating and that it isn’t the person who was cheated ons fault for that and obviously it turned out to not even be a thing but those issues still linger regardless. I also really wasn’t a fan of the killer reveal they gave him a lot of actual sympathetic moments to which the characters just kind of brush off and after he straight up dies in front of them which is a first for this show it’s just brushed off with a joke about how the Hollywood stars hated his writing anyways. This really depressed me because of how much it feels like a departure from the themes of the show. The finale of season 3 is one of my favorite episodes because of how much it humanizes the killers and I love how Mabel actually empathizes with him and tries to get him not to commit showing not only how complicated and nuanced people are but also how much Mabel has grown into an empathetic complete person. The show has other examples of this like the Theo focused episode in season 1 and Bunny’s flashback episode and even though he was obviously a pretty awful person the way the show handled it felt really callous and unlike the previous morals of the show. The callous tone is kept up with the way they respond to Sofias initial concerns in that same episode. Season 5 was a step up but I felt a lot of these problems were still there and it bums me out because I really do love the emotional parts of the show but I kind of feel like I recognize the show less and less which makes me really sad.
