Where does the money from Chicago parking tickets go to?
Genuine question. Got hit with a $200 ticket for not having an updated city sticker this week. I was under the impression I did not need one as I am in an area where parking is free (no zone signage). Well turns out if your car is registered to cook county you need to have the sticker regardless to park within city limits, my fault I did not know that.
I did previously have a city sticker when I did live in an area where there was zones, back in 2024. So when I went to renew I had a late fee, and I added a zone to have more parking options ($25) the total of that was $253. I am out $453, for parking…
Now after thinking wow, that is a f*ck ton of money just for parking, I wondered how many parking tickets does the city give out each year? Based on minor research, this seems to be a semi accurate number for the amount of ticket Chicago hands out for parking tickets alone -
Total tickets in first half of 2022: 1,073,919 Number of days in the period: 181(January 1 to June 30, 2022) Calculation: {1,073,919}{181} approx: 5,933 tickets per day
Now another quick google search tells me Chicago brings in $200 million in parking tickets a year. Where does this money go? Before people say I should’ve known or done the research, I get it. I am fortunate enough to pay this price, and only minority be on the struggle bus. But I think about the people who cannot and how this can ruin peoples months/ livelihood. $200 for a ticket seems absurd, and $253 because the late fee seems more absurd. If Chicago is making this much off parking alone, im only curious how much they make off other tickets and then where that money goes to?
