don’t even know where to start because this whole mess feels unreal but here goes. I had this flatmate who was also my close friend from first semester. We had been good friends for about a year and I trusted her way too much, even to the point of giving her the password to my tablet. That turned out to be the biggest mistake of my life. One night my boyfriend came over, I smoke and drink sometimes and he had brought me some cigarettes. My flatmate is extremely conservative, she thinks every guy you even talk to automatically becomes your ex, and she has never liked my lifestyle. While I was in my room drinking she decided to go through my tablet, read my private chats with my boyfriend, took his number from there and started texting him behind my back.

To make things worse I had recently gone out for dinner with a guy friend from my home state, someone I’ve known since school and who is genuinely like a brother to me. While talking with my flatmate I jokingly told her that he had said something like he would bring drinks for me sometime and maybe come over, and obviously I had no intention of ever inviting him over, it was just harmless banter. She twisted this story and told my boyfriend in a way that made it look like I was plotting to sneak him into the flat. Around the same time she also began telling my boyfriend about my so-called “exes.” The truth is I never lied to him, I just didn’t count every random talking stage as a relationship. But she painted me as some manipulative liar who was hiding my past. She told him that she was only concerned but the way she talked was pure character assassination. At one point she even told me that my boyfriend had asked her about my sexual history when in reality she was the one who kept pushing that narrative. When I confronted her she admitted she had texted him but claimed he asked her first, then when I asked her to show me the chat she said she deleted it. She even went as far as trying to script what I should say and straight up told me I should break up with him.

Luckily my boyfriend is not stupid. He didn’t believe her lies and later on he sent me all the receipts himself. At first he hadn’t told me anything because he didn’t want to ruin my friendship with her but when I saw the chats I realized how badly she had been slandering me. When I finally confronted her she started crying but it didn’t matter because the friendship was over. I broke it off right then and eventually I moved out. Looking back, I think you should never live with someone whose values don’t align with yours because you only discover the truth once you actually share a space. For me it turned toxic really fast and honestly I’m still shocked that someone I considered a friend could do this to me.

Flatmate went thru my chats , texted my bf and tried to sabotage my relationship
