Shoulder bag to backpack

I have illusions of being a one-bagger, but I keep ending up with many bags because (1) I love bags, and (2) I can never find the perfect one.

My preferred style leans toward the “satchel” — especially those with old-school, classic styling — though shoulder and messenger bags dominate my collection. The problem is I never want to carry a big bag, but the “right size” ones never seem to fit all my daily stuff: a 13″ laptop, lunch fixings, and the usual EDC items (phone, wallet, backup battery, sunglasses, keys).

I’m slowly coming to terms with the fact that I might just need to switch to a backpack for my EDC. I’d love to hear from anyone who’s made a similar transition — what worked, what didn’t, and what you ended up loving.

Bonus points for recommendations that lean toward classic or heritage styling — think waxed canvas, leather details, or minimal design. Extra-extra bonus points for options that don’t break the bank!
