Professor is threatening to remove me from the PhD program for being only good at software and AI implementation
TL;DR: I am a first-year PhD student who was admitted directly after my bachelor’s degree, without having taken the necessary courses related to my professor’s research area. I am strong in implementing my professor’s research projects but still lack theoretical background and academic writing skills. Despite that, we have submitted around four papers within a year. But my professor is threatening to kick me out from PhD program.
Hello everyone,
I am currently working with a new assistant professor who has extremely high expectations. Everything started with research funding. I was working very hard in his lab, spending days and nights implementing his AI research projects on smartphones. One day, we had a conversation, and he asked me to accept his PhD offer. At that time, I was still an undergraduate student and hadn’t taken any AI or sensing courses. Wanting to make a good impression, I accepted his offer.
Fast forward, we completed the project implementation and started writing papers. However, I was struggling with theory and wasn’t familiar with LaTeX. He began saying things like, “I will rescind your PhD offer” and “You’re a PhD student—you should know everything.” Then he gave me another implementation task and told me to stay quiet.
By the way, I am the only PhD student he currently has, and not many people in our lab are doing their work effectively. I handle almost 80% of the implementation and am doing my best to improve my theoretical and writing skills. But implementation work takes a lot of time, and the other students don’t do much unless I push them.
I don’t know what to do. Should I just ignore his threats and only focus on his feedback about my weaknesses, or should I talk to the relevant department about this mental pressure? I know I will keep doing my best—we’ll submit the paper—but I’m afraid he will threaten me again during submission, and I’ll just end up feeling even more anxious.
