Why are some people so bad at math?

I'm a South Korean student who spent almost half my life in the UK, and I honestly feel that the people I meet on the internet are just plain terrible at math, especially when it comes to simple arithmetic. I saw this Indian man on an American show, for example, who was called a genius just because he could solve a 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication problem in ten seconds. I don't understand why people would praise something so basic.
