My take on Lake Mungo

My take on Lake Mungo (why I think Matthew fabricated everything)

After watching Lake Mungo, I don’t think the film is really about a ghost at all. I think Matthew was behind both the Lake Mungo video and the photos of Alice, just like he previously faked the other footage “to help” his mom.

There are several clues that point in that direction: • We already know Matthew has a history of fabricating evidence — he admits to manipulating photos before. • The Lake Mungo video is too perfect — Alice’s figure appears in the exact position her body was later found in. • We never actually see how that footage was discovered or verified by anyone outside the family. • Matthew has full access to all the recordings and photos, and he’s clearly the one who knows how to edit and produce them.

My theory is that Matthew used or took a photo of Alice’s body and composited it into the video, maybe as a way to give his family (and himself) something to believe in — not out of malice, but out of grief and guilt.

That would also explain the film’s unsettling ending, where we see still photos with Alice quietly present in the background — images the family never mentioned. To me, that suggests they’re hiding something, or that their entire narrative is unreliable.

So instead of a supernatural story, Lake Mungo becomes a psychological one: a family that can’t cope with loss ends up creating their own ghost. It’s not Alice who’s haunting them — it’s their guilt and denial haunting themselves.
