Relocating seems complicated - help!
I'm currently a post doc in health sciences at a UK institution and I'm looking to relocate to another city.
I'm quite confused about how this is meant to work, as it seems like in academia this is much more complicated than it would be in any other sector. I'd love some advice on the options I have (or don't have).
Context:
-
I am currently employed as a research fellow on a fixed-term contract for a project for the next two years. My current group lead, at my current institution, is the PI on this project.
-
I have not yet discussed my plans for relocation with my group lead (which obviously I need to do, but I want to understand my options first).
-
I am fairly confident that my current group lead would not allow me to work remotely due to reasons. So, I would need to get primary employment at an institution in the city I'm planning to move to. I know of a group at that institution that may be happy to accomodate me if I can bring my own funding.
-
I am currently awaiting to hear back from a funder about a grant proposal I submitted, on which I would be PI (actually co-PI with someone from another institution). I will receive a decision on this early next year. I have reasons to be cautiously optimistic that this will be funded but of course that isn't certain.
-
I have just been awarded grant funding for a two year project on which me and my group lead were co-lead applicants.
I don't know if this is just me, but this strikes me as quite a complicated situation and frankly no one has ever really explained to me how all of this is supposed to work.
What I find a bit strange is that as PI, I can bring funding with me, but then I have no funds to pay my own salary? And vice versa, I can't bring the funds that do pay my salary with me because I'm not PI on that project. This is quite odd to me.
I'm very integrated in my current team operationally and professionally, and the potential grant funding that I am waiting to hear about (that I would be PI on, but not my group lead) comes with funds for a RA, which my current group is standing to benefit from. Uprooting and taking these funds with me elsewhere (if we get them) may rupture my relationship with my current group lead in a dramatic way. I'm keen to create a constructive and collaborative way forward that preserves my existing professional relationships and connections.
I would be very appreciative if anyone can anyone shed some light on what my options are here?
(Obviously, I need to have a conversation with my group lead about this but I just want to know where I stand first)
