Afghan Star has always been more than just a singing competition. Season 6, in particular, became a story about manipulation, fear, and how an entire nation was made to crave female performers.

The producers intentionally limited each season to only two female contestants. This wasn’t an accident—it was a strategy. By giving the audience so little, they made every female contestant a focal point of fascination. One girl was cast as the “good” girl—obedient, quiet, traditional. The other was labeled “bad”—confident, expressive, independent. Ordinary choices and behavior became reasons for public scrutiny.

Shabana Azizi and Suraya Talash started the season as close friends. They laughed together, supported each other, and shared moments behind the scenes. But as the weeks went on, the show’s editing and commentary subtly fostered tension between them. Small moments were framed as signs of jealousy or conflict. By mid-season, their natural drifting apart was portrayed as hostility.

Shabana wanted more freedom in her performances. On elimination nights, she asked to perform with male contestants instead of singing with Suraya every week. Instead of being supported, she was mocked. Suraya, meanwhile, was praised for refusing to sing with boys—as if caution and obedience were virtues and independence was a flaw.

At first, judges celebrated Shabana’s unique style, her boldness, and her stage presence. But after criticism from the public and extremist groups, they reversed course, denouncing the very qualities that had initially made her stand out. Shabana was trapped—criticized for the traits that made her shine.

When Suraya was eliminated, Shabana was staged next to her on stage, without a hug or any sign of closeness. The audience interpreted this as hostility, even though their friendship had already naturally drifted. Through careful editing and staging, Shabana was cast as the “bad girl.” Despite singing for a critical and often hostile audience and practicing relentlessly, she became the target of public scorn.

The pressure was relentless. Judges made cutting remarks, like “I am not giving you any number today,” and rumors about her performances spread—stories about children fainting during her singing or her voice being “trapped in an old woman’s body”—none of which were true. Meanwhile, Suraya was praised, received medals, and even got concert offers. Some suggested her treatment was influenced by her Hazara background, yet she still left the show before Shabana, leaving Shabana as the central figure for both obsession and criticism.

Producers and judges shaped the story invisibly. Every edit, every staged moment, every comment controlled audience perception—deciding who to love, who to hate, and who to compare. And it worked: the audience largely saw Shabana as the “villain,” despite her talent, dedication, and courage.

I THINK Shabana’s journey is both tragic and powerful. She endured criticism, rumors, and exhaustion in a society not ready to accept a young woman asserting herself—and she continued to perform, no matter the pressure💓.
