Is hatred of constant advertising a Xennial thing?
Growing up, the only commercials you’d see would be in TV show breaks, sometimes VHS movies before the actual movie starts (I’m looking at you, Diet Pepsi ad in Top Gun) and the radio.
Now, I’m bombarded with advertising not just in TV media and streaming, but things like 3 sets of ads in a 10 minute YouTube video or some obnoxious popup bullshit trying to read a news article where I have to X out of 3-4 different ads in multiple places on the page. Or I hear the same ads over and over on local radio after 2 or 3 songs. This infuriates me so much that it makes me not even want to buy whatever product they’re pitching which is the opposite effect of what smart advertising should do.
I don’t know if this kind of marketing is more effective on younger generations or not but I feel like coming from the more “lenient” age of advertising this is way more in your face and a big turn off compared to the 80s to early 2000s.
What do you think? Is this feeling commonplace for our generation or just people in general? If it’s in general I have no idea how advertising is supposed to make anyone money. 🤷♂️
