Renovating existing house to a naalukettu veedu while not being in the country

Hello, my wife(F36) and I(M39) live in the US. Our family has property in Thrissur. No one lives in the house as my in laws and my parents live elsewhere in south India. The current house is about 40 years old. Given all the upheaval in the US, we want to come back to live in Kerala in about 5-10 years. We were thinking of renovating the house and make it into a traditional naalukettu house. My wife and I are confused about a few things.

  1. Firstly, about the practicality of a naalukettu house. Given the open nature of the courtyard, how does one handle the temperature in the summer? Running an AC in the huge open space sounds expensive/futile. Does the presence of the courtyard really reduce temperature by itself to a bearable level? I am hoping someone who built a naalukettu within the last 10 years or so could comment?

  2. How do people handle the logistics of maintaining the house? I am sure the use of wood, glass, open courtyard etc will require regular cleaning. Do services like urban company etc work well in thrissur?

  3. We would like to do the renovation now even though we don’t plan to live in the house on a permanent basis at least for another 10 years. The reason we want to do it now is because we want our parents to see the finished house and maybe live there for a few months at a time for the next few years. Does this make sense or are we being wool headed? Thanks!
