Revised Mnemosyne vs Anking for Step1
TLDR: US IMG studying for Step1 within 6 months (and Step2 within 2 years), near the end of German medical school, considering either using the ShrikeandThorned's Revised Mnemosyne Step 1 Deck or Anking. Asking for what fits my situation better.
for full context: I have just written the 2nd German state-medical exam and have about 6 months for my thesis before I start my practical year (similar to intern year in US) and I want to get Step1 in that timeframe. I used Anki very successfully to study for the exam (we have Ankizin) and I want to use Anki going forward. The 2nd state exam is very clinical-reasoning oriented, asks clinically relevant facts, treatments and diagnostics. The 1st state exam is only preclinical but that was about 3 years ago for me. I would like to say I have a decent foundation in clinical and I was very good in preclinical stuff, but preclinical is a while back for me.
From what I read, the revised Mnemosyne Deck, and moreso First-Aid from what it is based on, aligns veeeery closely to what is ultimately asked on Step1. It seems attractive to me because it only has about 10-14k cards, is organized and formatted well, and seems very efficient and concise without losing much depth. It seems to be usable as a primary studying method (as explanations are included in each card). Im unsure about continuity in keeping these cards active long term for step2 though. It's less known tho, so not as tried and true.
The Anking deck is the classic, well-established deck. However I find it a bit overwhelming. If I take out all lower yield cards and only keep the tags HighYield, RelativelyHighYield, and HighYield-temporary I have about 19k cards in the step1 deck, which is a lot, considering I only did 6k for my 2nd state exam. I find the formatting visually a bit meh (compared to Ankizin, which I loved). I dont really want to use another studying resource, except a qbank (Ive got my eye on Amboss). This means the benefit of Anking being well-tagged for various learning resources doesn't benefit me that much. With Anking, once I finished step1, I could suspend the non-overlapping step1 cards and keep the step2 cards going forward after step1-- which to me is very attractive. I would set myself a solid focused foundation for step2.
so if I had to sum sum it up:
ShrikeandThorned's Revised Mnemosyne is shorter, first-aid based, a bit cleaner, but doesn't carry over well into step 2 down the line.
Anking is more comprehensive, maybe a bit bloated, tried and true, and carries over well into step2.
What do you guys recommend? what are your experiences with these decks (especially curious about mnemosyne since it is less known)? What do you think applies better to my timeline and situation?
