Our best travel pillow picks for long flights that actually helped us sleep (we've tested a few)

Neck jerking? Head bobbing? Getting some zzz's on a long flight is rough if you don't have the right travel pillow. Good thing we got our travel tester (on actual flights) to test out a few travel pillows and share her experiences and top picks with us:

After too many overnight flights spent jerking awake every time my head bobbed, I finally accepted the truth: a decent travel pillow is the only upgrade economy will ever give me. I’ve cycled through a whole drawer of them at this point, from inflatable and memory foam to scarf-like things and even one that felt like strapping a pool noodle to my neck.

Here’s my take on the best travel pillows for a long flight that actually makes a difference.

  1. Cabeau Evolution S3

The first time I used this, I finally stopped doing the awkward “neck whip” every 15 minutes. The straps hook onto the headrest so you don’t flop sideways, and the flat back doesn’t push your head forward.

It’s comfy memory foam, folds down into a little case, and the cover’s washable (ideal after sweaty flights). This is the one I keep coming back to on overnight flights.

  1. Trtl Travel Pillow

Looks weird, but it works better than you’d think. It’s basically a fleece wrap with a plastic support inside, but it props your head at a decent angle so you don’t wake up with a crick.

I used this on a 9-hour middle seat to Europe, and while I didn’t sleep great (who does?), my neck wasn’t wrecked. Bonus: it’s lighter than my phone and takes zero room in my backpack.

  1. BCOZZY Neck Pillow

This one saved me on a Tokyo flight when I kept waking up with my mouth hanging open. The wraparound design closes in the front, so your chin’s supported and your head isn’t flopping forward.

It’s softer than it looks, and because the back is flat, it doesn’t shove your head forward in those tight airline seats. They make kid sizes too, which is handy if you’re traveling with family.

  1. Infinity Pillow (Huzi)

This one’s like a giant fabric loop, and honestly it’s kind of fun to play with. You can wrap it around your neck, squish it against the window, or turn it into a makeshift body pillow.

I used it on a long haul to Sydney and loved that the bamboo fabric didn’t make me overheat. It’s bulkier than some of the others, but if you like adjusting positions every 20 minutes, this one adapts.

  1. Ostrichpillow Go

The memory foam is chunky but in a good way. It feels more like a brace than a pillow, which I personally like when I’m trying to knock out for hours.

The shape is sleek and hugs your neck all the way around, so you don’t end up cocked at a weird angle. I used it on a red-eye to Lisbon and, no lie, it felt like the closest I’ve come to actual sleep in coach.

  1. Travelrest Nest Ultimate Memory Foam

This one surprised me. It’s thick memory foam with a non-slip back, but it also stuffs into a pouch that compresses to about a quarter of its size. I clipped it to my carry-on and didn’t regret bringing it, which is rare for bulky pillows.

Used it on a 12-hour trip and appreciated the plush velour cover (which is also removable and hand washable). If you hate committing bag space, this balances comfort and portability.

  1. Sea to Summit Aeros Premium Traveller Pillow

Okay, this is technically an inflatable, but hear me out: it doesn’t feel like one. The fabric cover is soft, and the shape cups your head instead of letting it roll around.

You can adjust the firmness by letting a little air out. It packs down to the size of a soda can and weighs almost nothing so I just throw it in my backpack for backup. It’s perfect if you’re a carry-on only person.

  1. J-Pillow

This one looks odd, but in a window seat, it makes 100% sense. The “J” shape fills that dead space between your head and shoulder, while the little trunk tucks under your chin so you’re not nodding forward.

I used it on a transatlantic flight and managed a few solid hours pressed into the corner without waking up sore. It’s bulkier to carry, but if you’re a window-only flyer, it’s worth it.

How to not waste money on the wrong pillow

Not every “best travel pillow” works for everyone. The trick is matching the pillow to your seat and how you normally crash out:

Window sleepers --> You’ll want side and chin support so go for the J-Pillow, BCOZZY, or Infinity travel pillows.

Middle/aisle folks --> Go for something that locks your head upright, like the Cabeau S3, Trtl, or Ostrichpillow Go.

Packing light? --> Inflatable or compressible pillows, such as Sea to Summit or Travelrest Nest save space.

Other things I look at: flat vs. thick backs (flat is usually better in cramped seats), washable covers (planes aren’t exactly sterile), and whether you run hot or cold. Squishy bamboo fabrics are nice if you overheat. And don’t forget washability coz planes are gross.

So what's the best travel pillow for long flights?

For me, the Cabeau Evolution S3 has been the most consistent win since the straps stop the head-bob, the foam feels right, and it packs up well. That said, plenty of folks swear by Trtl or Infinity for packability and comfort.

Would love to hear real stories from the aisle, middle, and window crowd.
