There are 2 types of offenses in my book (not exactly but almost)
-
Offenses that get it done by whatever means possible.
-
Offenses that just feed one or two guys.
I know this is an overgeneralization, but I feel like identifying this before or in a given season can help with sorting out opportunity and outcome.
Allow me to list all 32 offenses into 3 categories of where they fall relative to these two types, with a 1.5 category to describe the offenses that are more balanced between these two styles.
For type 1 offenses, it's hard to trust any one player a ton. These offenses just spread the ball and their backup running backs will snipe your touchdowns at will. Sometimes their QBs can be solid because spreading the ball around is unpredictable and that can lead to good results against defenses. You'll notice that these teams have almost no top 10 players at their positions. The volume usually just isn't there to support that.
For type 2 offenses, they just feed their workhorses dry. And usually those workhorses are so good that even when the defense knows it's coming, they can't stop it. These teams almost certainly have top 10 options they're feeding, week after week.
1: Patriots. Broncos. Steelers. Commanders. Seahawks. Cardinals. Titans. Jaguars. Texans. Chiefs. Chargers. Jets. Giants. Saints. Panthers.
You'll notice that a lot of these^ teams have QBs that get solid rushing stats. That adds into your RBs and WRs getting points sniped.
1.5:
Bears. Rams. Colts(I would put them at 2 because of Taylor, but Pittman and Warren are doing nice things.) Packers. Lions. Vikings (JJ would make them 2 normally but not as much this year). Eagles. Cowboys. Buccaneers. Dolphins.
You'll notice that these^ are among the best teams in the NFL, probably because they all have multiple top weapons and are offensively very balanced in terms of who they give the ball to.
2:
49ers. Ravens. Bengals. Raiders. Falcons. Browns. Bills.
For these offenses, Mcaffrey. Henry and Lamar. Chase. Jeanty (he's been getting good work but I expect it to increase even more after the bye). Bijan and London. Judkins (because they just have nobody else lol). Allen and Cook.
There ended up being a lot more teams that fall under 1 than I expected, but I feel like this is a fair shake.
Let me know your thoughts
