Iron levels low

ADVICE

Hi all,

I’ve been unwell on and off for years and currently being seen by the rhematoid department. They’d mentioned holding off starting to try for a baby but it was too late and turns out we are already pregnant! Woo. The rheumatoid dr has been great and now just waiting for ultrasounds on my joints.

However today I got access to my gp record online (I’m in uk) I had my bloods checked and the gp said all was fine. Now looking at my ferritin levels myself, over years it has consistently between 19-21 very very low. I’ve been taking iron daily as Part of a pre natal for 3 months but it’s only had 10mg in. My levels are now 28 (with the supplement) which is still lower than minimum recommended 30. (And optimal 50+!)

Have called gp but they cannot give me an appointment for 2 weeks and my first midwife appointment isn’t for another 4.

Do I up the iron myself in meantime or wait? I’m worried it may impact the health of my baby if I’m low!
