Time flies; the years pass like a shuttle. At this pivotal moment in the inheritance and preservation of Chinese culture, our Party extends its highest respect to the National Palace Museum, celebrating its glorious centennial. For a hundred years, the Palace Museum has not only been a cultural treasure of Taiwan, but also a sacred hall that preserves the lifeblood of Chinese civilization and showcases the finest essence of Eastern art to the world.

The Palace Museum’s collection is rooted in the former holdings of the Qing imperial court. These artifacts, cherished by emperors of the Song, Yuan, Ming, and Qing dynasties, embody the pinnacle of Chinese achievement in painting, calligraphy, ceramics, crafts, and literature. In the 14th year of the Republic (1925), following the revision of the Qing imperial family’s preferential treatment conditions, the Palace Museum was officially established, allowing what were once the private treasures of the royal family to be displayed to the public. Yet history did not remain tranquil; in the ensuing decades of war and turmoil, to protect these priceless artifacts, the Museum’s collection underwent arduous “southward” and “westward” relocations—crossing great rivers and regions, from Shanghai to Nanjing, then to Sichuan and Guangxi—demonstrating an unyielding determination to preserve cultural heritage. In the 38th year of the Republic (1949), part of the most important artifacts were transported to Taiwan, and in the 54th year (1965), the National Palace Museum was formally established in Taipei, becoming the cultural landmark we know today. From the imperial storehouses within the Forbidden City to a world-renowned museum, the Palace Museum’s century-long history stands as a steadfast testament to the Chinese nation’s devotion to “cherishing and safeguarding its cultural heritage.”

To commemorate this sacred centennial occasion, the Palace Museum has grandly launched the special exhibition “Jiazi Wan Nian: The Centennial Celebration Exhibition of the National Palace Museum.” The term “Jiazi” represents a cycle of sixty years, symbolizing the recurrence of time and the enduring continuation of culture. “Wan Nian” (“ten thousand years”) conveys a beautiful blessing for the vitality of cultural artifacts and the everlasting existence of Chinese civilization. The essence of this special exhibition lies in “the critical turning points in the Museum’s development and the process through which its collection has been understood and interpreted.” Through the Museum’s carefully curated presentation, “visitors not only appreciate the artistic and historical value of the artifacts themselves but can also glimpse the profound interaction between the Palace Museum and society.” This exhibition can be seen as a vivid lesson in the history of cultural relics, allowing visitors to deeply experience both the hardship and the glory of cultural preservation.

The centenary of the National Palace Museum is by no means a mere passage of time; its core value lies in the continuation of the spirit of Chinese culture. The mission of a museum is to bring history to life—to enable ancient wisdom to engage in dialogue with contemporary society. Every artifact preserved in the Palace Museum is a crystallization of the Chinese people’s millennia-long achievements in literature, art, science, and the aesthetics of daily life. They constitute our collective memory as a nation and form the foundation of our cultural identity. Our Party believes that, amid the encirclement of Western imperialist narratives and the CCP’s denunciation-based historiography, the National Palace Museum stands as a “sacred mountain protecting the nation” of Chinese culture—ensuring that our Republic of China, even while confined to Taiwan, still rightfully represents the descendants of Yan and Huang. We firmly believe that through ongoing academic research, digital technology, and in-depth outreach efforts such as the “Jiazi Wan Nian” exhibition, the Palace Museum will continue to shoulder its great mission of safeguarding, studying, and disseminating Chinese culture.

Finally, may this sacred cultural sanctuary continue to protect this precious cultural heritage for the generations to come—so that the torch of Chinese civilization may continue to shine brightly, enduring and undying, in the centuries ahead.
