Should I open a high yield savings account now and other questions
I know this is probably common question but I have a few questions, some pertaining to how much I need to do and what makes the most sense for my current situation. Basically I have a normal savings account from Chase for a few years and at the beginning of the year I opened a Capitol One credit card. The high yield savings account from Capitol One right now isn't the highest but it's up there and they offer a promo code in emails.
So here are my questions:
Should I go with Capitol One 360, or go for something like OpenBank with a higher rate? Or is the higher rate (3.4% 4.2%) not that significant because I have the Capitol One promo code? It might not be enough money to matter in the short term and Capitol One also just seems convenient since I've already done banking with them.
First off is it actually a good time to open an account? Does fed interest rates being cut make it worse? Or does that mean I ought to do it now before offers get even worse? A coworker told me during in the financial crisis in 2009 interest rates were way higher when he opened his, so maybe its worth waiting to see if the banks are people to let them hold their money in a few more months.
And related to the other two, how much of a commitment is opening an account? I'm not clear on if the interest rate I get now is the one it has until I open a new on or if the rate in the same account fluctuates. And if I do but in a year there are much better interest would it be easy to close the old hys account and open a new one without much loss?
Final question is about moving the money ($10k) from a chase savings account? Do I want to go to a chase bank and ask them to move my money and then close my old savings account or should I move everything online and keep that account?
