LG G5 65” vs Sony Bravia 9 65”

Purchasing EUROPE

Hey all, I‘m planning to purchase my first "real” TV to replace an old 32”-ish LCD Screen. Reasonable size given the room layout, wall size etc would be 65”.

Im torn between the LG G5 as OLED candidate and the Sony Bravia 9 as an LCD alternative.

Viewing habits:

  • 70% movies and shows (streaming)
  • 20% gaming, currently only on the Nintendo switch
  • 10% sports, mainly darts, sometimes soccer and rarely hockey

I’d say the room is reasonably bright as roughly 50% of the wall area to one side and behind the sofa are windows, still we are mostly watching in the evening and with the blinds down if necessary. From what I’ve heard about the G5 it should not have any problems regarding brightness, even less the Bravia 9.

Personally I am very much leaning towards the G5 as I understand it is extremely bright for an OLED display and most of the ratings I have read are extremely positive (contrast, black intensity, performance, UI, apps, reaction time, …). Price would be around 1.8 k€ where I live. Based on some reading I still have some concerns that might drive me to an LCD alternative:

  • I’ve heard that the G5 has (had?) issues with HDR10 display that have supposedly been fixed by some firmware update in June, at least for filmmaker mode. Are those issues still persistent in the other display modes, and If so how bad are they?
  • The screen will - due to the room layout and limited options for placement - be hit by direct sunlight for some time of the day (windows to the west and north to the right and behind the couch, in summer the sun is setting so far to the north that there is direct sunlight through the northern window). In the summer the blinds are usually down during the day but during winter this is not really an option. I read that direct sunlight can damage OLED displays but had a hard time finding info that puts this into perspective (i.e. how long is dangerous, summer vs. winter, …). Would it be a better choice to go with a LCD display in this case?
  • I understand OLED burn-in should not be an issue given the advancements in technology and my viewing habits.

As an LCD alternative I basically only identified the Sony Bravia 9 if I want comparable image quality. The 65” model goes for around 2.5 k€ so as I understand I’d be getting a model that’s one year older and with slightly worse quality for a decently higher price. I’d hate to make this compromise if my concerns listed above are not really valid, so I would really appreciate some insight.

Thanks for reading!
