hould My Brother Buy a High-Mileage Used Venza or a New Hybrid SUV?

Hello, my brother is currently trying to buy a 2023 Venza Limited with 50,000 miles for $33,000 OTD.

When I asked my car-savvy friend, he said my brother could buy that specific car if he really wanted it (my brother isn't fully set on the 2023 Venza) , but my friend strongly emphasized that the Venza is a bad deal. His reasoning:

  • A 50,000-mile car is considered quite high-mileage for its age. If it wasn't a Toyota with inflated resale value, it would be worth next to nothing.
  • Why spend over $30,000 on a high-mileage, used car when you can get a brand-new vehicle for a comparable price?

I really trust my friend, but unfortunately, he is going on a vacation and will not be able to keep helping me. How can I, a noob, convincingly argue this point to my brother?

My Brother's Criteria:

  • SUV
  • In a range of $30,000 - $35,000 OTD.
  • Needs to be very reliable.
  • A lot of safety features
  • My brother has a $2,000 incentive from his employer if he buys a hybrid, so a hybrid would be ideal for him.

RAV4, CR-V, CX-5, CX-50, and Hyundai Tucson all have some good deals that will expire on November 3rd. (it worths considering Hyndai and Mazda have bad resale value, but we can take it). I'm personally leaning toward the 2025, 2026 CRV and 2026 CRV Hybrid since it has these three deals going on right now: 3.99% APR, $500 military, and $1,000 Honda Loyalty/Conquest.

P.S. As a noob, all tips are greatly appreciated!
