My baby was hit by a car and I don't know what to do

Medical Questions

I live in a rural area and our house in surrounded by fields, woodland and lanes. It's a safe area. However, someone going through the lanes hit my cat and didn't stop or take him to the vet, and he had to drag himself back to our house with a broken leg, broken shoulder, and two collapsed lungs. He couldn't breathe yet he still made it home. I am so angry at that driver but that's not the point.

The point is, he's currently stable - but the vet said he'll likely need surgery on his back leg. This will likely be months of healing where he has to be kept in a crate / enclosed space and won't be allowed outside. My cat is a very, very outdoorsy cat. He's grown up on a farm, he loves the outdoors. We have a tracker to see where he is and he loves running around miles away.

It seems so cruel to have to shut him away like that, and they have mentioned the idea of putting him down but that seems so extreme. He's only just turned one and he's perfectly healthy and is so so happy. However, one of my friends had her cat run over and she went through with the surgery and healing time etc. But then only a few weeks after letting her cat out, he got run over again and died.

This was in a different area where they're right next to a busy road, but still. It makes me so nervous that I'll spend thousands on his surgery, put my baby through immense stress from the healing experience, and then get our hopes up just for him to be hit again.

I need other people to give me advice on their experiences - especially people with very active and outdoorsy cats who wouldn't cope well with being shut indoors for a long period of time. I just don't know what to do.

(For context, he's a mixed breed of Norwegian forest cat, bengal, and British shorthair - hence why he's so outdoorsy and I think it would be cruel to keep him inside)
