Grading Doubt

One of my friends got an ‘I’ grade in his Maths mid exam (1st semester). He’s confused — does this mean he has to repeat the semester, or can he make it up by scoring well in the final exam?
If he can improve it in the final, how many marks would he need to pass overall?
