Joint bank account for married couple
Hi, my wife and I are currently considering which bank to open a joint bank account with. We both currently have personal accounts at ING, but we'd prefer to open a joint account at a different bank so that in case of an outage or other problems, we'll also have some financial resources in another place.
The main idea is to have two individual accounts (we'll probably stay with ING) where our salaries are deposited and which will be for our private needs, while the joint account will be for shared expenses (bills, shopping, vacations, etc.) and savings. We plan to transfer a certain percentage amount from our salaries to the joint account monthly. So most likely there will be quite a large number of transactions per month from the joint account, and probably sporadic cash withdrawals at ATMs. Therefore, a plus would be the ability to withdraw cash commission-free at any ATM (as a nice-to-have). Additionally, a pleasant mobile app as well as a web app would be a plus (I personally prefer to make transactions from a laptop and browser rather than from a mobile phone). We don't care about a currency account on the joint account because we also use Revolut - (if you think Revolut doesn't make sense and some bank offers better/cheaper solutions, we'd be happy to hear opinions and consider a change).
So to summarize, we care about:
- simple account opening (it would be great if the whole process could be done online)
- the lowest possible or zero fees for maintenance/transactions
- savings account
- joint account (so that we both have equal ownership - I know that some banks offer an account on an individual + co-ownership basis)
- pleasant app
It would be nice if:
- there was the possibility of commission-free withdrawals at any ATM
We don't care about:
- the number of local bank branches
It would be very nice if you could recommend your tried-and-tested banks where you have such accounts and write what you consider a plus and what a minus. Thanks!
