This closing message from Dwight Spencer perfectly captures the dual work of conscious becoming.

**The full quote:**

"We need to be able to have some kindness when it comes to how we've gotten to where we are and realize that we're not limited by the box that others want to put us in. If there is a dream, if there is some other capacity that you wish to fulfill..."

**Why both parts matter:**

**PART 1: Self-compassion for your journey**

Stop beating yourself up for:

* The creative dreams you deferred because bills needed paying
* The parts of yourself you hid to fit into unwelcoming spaces
* The "safe" choices you made when risk felt impossible
* The compromises you accepted when you had fewer options

You weren't weak. You weren't selling out. You were surviving and adapting with the resources and awareness you had at the time.

That version of you got you HERE. That deserves kindness, not judgment.

**PART 2: Liberation from others' boxes**

People love putting creatives in boxes:

* "You're a \[specific type of artist\]—don't cross genres"
* "People with your background don't succeed at that"
* "You're too \[old/young/inexperienced/different\]"
* "Be realistic—that's not how things work"
* "Stay in your lane"

These boxes serve THEIR comfort, not your growth.

If there's a dream calling you—even one that doesn't fit their neat categories—you're allowed to pursue it.

**The combination creates sustainable growth:**

Without self-compassion → We shame ourselves into paralysis

Without breaking boxes → We stay constrained by others' limitations

WITH BOTH → We honor our journey while stepping into unlimited becoming

**Personal reflection:**

I spent years judging past-me for creative choices that seemed "safe" or "selling out." Why didn't I take bigger risks? Why did I hide parts of myself?

Then I realized: that version of me was navigating real constraints—financial insecurity, unsupportive environments, limited awareness. Those choices made sense in context.

Once I stopped judging my past, I could actually change my future.

And once I realized the "boxes" people kept trying to put me in (too old to start this, too inexperienced for that, not the "right type" of creative) were THEIR limitations, not mine? Everything opened up.

**The questions:**

1. What do you need to have more kindness toward in your own journey?
2. What box are others trying to put you in—and what dream doesn't fit that box?

Would love to hear your reflections on either or both.
