How many characters and words in the plot?

When you are writing in your store, sometimes I feel I’ve given it too little of information to write the story in the way that I’m envisioning. Other times, I have gone longer and feel like it’s too long and then ignore some of the information when you guys are writing plots, how detail do you get and how many characters or words do you focus on?
