This world of tomorrow- second preview
I haven’t seen a review on here yet so I’ll share my thoughts. Theater: First to anyone who saw Brothers Size in the same theater you will be shocked. The space is transformed from the round to a more traditional stage. The seats are well spaced and comfortable and the rake is fantastic. I would guess not a bad seat in the house.
The play itself is like being told a story by the gentle Tom Hanks you’ve seen in the movies. It’s a soft sweet tale of love and nostalgia. It’s also quite funny. And lots of NYC specific references. For me it was hard not to like. The acting - Hanks and O’Hara- are of course excellent. But everyone on stage played the roles to perfection in my mind. I was attached to each one even if they were only on stage for a few minutes.
I don’t think this is really a spoiler but I was concerned about the time travel trope going in as I’m not so into that. But for me it was done well, not too much explanation and it didn’t take away from the human side of the story.
The set was relatively sparse but enough that it felt full and helped locate you. I thought the LED pillars worked really well. There was a very cute moment when the line was about how nice it was that there was a bench right there and I think the set was just a little late getting into place so the piece came up from the floor just then. It was so well done I’m not even sure it wasn’t planned.
I don’t know if it’s just for previews but everyone received a small button going in.
Overall it was just a lovely night at the theater. I didn’t feel challenged, or emotionally wrought, it felt like everyone was smiling and pleasant as they exited. It was a soft story with nice people done well. It was exactly what I was looking for right now.
