Trigger Warning: talk of blood and death

My pet snake, Orpheus, who I rescued back in 2020 just passed away Halloween night. He was born May 31st 2007. From what I know he was a classroom pet here in Calgary Alberta for close to 11 years. Afterwards he was adopted by a student who kept him till they had to go off to university, where they surrendered him to the Calgary Humane Society. He's been with me through my high-school and part of my university journey. This morning I went to go check on him and fill up his water dish, when I saw that he didn't react at all to me opening his enclosure. I moved his hide and it broke my heart to see what I saw. There was blood all over the bedding, and he was just laying there limp. His mouth was still partially open with something sticking out, I pulled it out and it was a mouse bone also covered in blood. Im writing this hoping that somebody knows what happend to my baby. I hate to think that he died in pain afraid and alone in the middle of the night. I was worried something might have been wrong because he looked a bit skinnier than usual and his last shed wasn't perfect, but I didn't think that something like this would have happened. Please is anyone knows what happened to him, I need to know. I dont want something so horrible to happen to any future snakes I might have. And does anyone know what I should do with his body? Do I burry him? Or is there anything unique i could do to honor him?

Rest in peace Orpheus
