Is it possible for people who live alone take sodium oxybates safely?
Earlier this year, I was diagnosed with Narcolepsy (N1) after taking the MSLT. My doctor said that sodium oxybates would be the most effective line of treatment for me, but he is very hesitant to prescribe them to me since I live alone. He expressed concern that medication side effects could cause me fall during the night, sleep walk, or could prevent me from waking up and getting myself to safety during emergency situations. Because of this, I’ve mostly been trying different wake promoting agents with minimal success.
I am on Vyvanse for ADHD, but still struggle with EDS. Sunosi gave me really bad anxiety in the first couple of weeks and WAKIX started to give me a rash and acid reflux. I tried modafinil for a couple of months- at first I thought it was helping, but over time my EDS started to worsen and started to struggle with symptoms of depression. I’m feeling very stuck and find myself wishing I could try something like Xywav instead of “band aid” wake promoters and stimulants.
Has anyone else experienced this with their doctor? Is it common for doctors to avoid prescribing sodium oxybates to people living alone? For those who take them and live alone, do you feel safe doing so?
