What are the trinket slots for?

When you get better a augment you can unlock 'Augmented Slots' that you put trinkets in.

I have 3 trinkets but it doesn't look like they do anything: Silver Teaspoon set, Air Freshener and Torn book.

Are there other trinkets out there that actually do things? Things like increase damage, stamina etc.
