After some reflection
Udio is responsible for drawing storytelling out of me that I didn't know I had. I don't feel that I've refined my potential enough. I consider the outputs to be demos and kept everything private for myself. I worked out complex philosophies and moral dilemmas, turning my long division into "music", but really falling in love with writing prose in general.
I want to thank Udio's team for this. I'm not sure what makes it different than any other writing, maybe it was the immediate realization of the ideas in a tangible form? I had to cancel my subscription that I've had since day one, because I cannot stomach the idea of my writing being a profit vehicle for company that has committed the same offenses against artists since Elvis, and earlier. Ownership of property through a "contract" where the artist loses out on so much.
---I'm not going to be one of those lyricists for the company, I'm not going to accept credits from a contest as a form of compensation, on a platform I pay to use, while they make real money, especially since I've never monetized a single output from the platform.---
I understand that sometimes we have to make choices that aren't ours. I'm not interested in making music to sound like other artists, sometimes it did but that wasn't the intent, nor what I found to be the valuable part of this application. The strongarm by UMG to commandeer the entire platform to make that the focus going forward is myopic, and condescending.
100 years ago, Universal pulled a skeezy move on Walt Disney and stole Oswald the Lucky Rabbit through legalities. But, out of that, he created Mickey Mouse. I'm looking forward to the "Mickey Mouse Operation" that comes out of this, one that excludes the established music label industry, and UMG can SMD.
