Cleaning Lime/Calcium Buildup in Rim holes - Can i use CLR or Mainline?

Almost all of the front rim holes to my toilet are clogged with a build up of lime or calcium - Ive gotten them unclogged for the most part with a coat hanger, but its still making a moaning noise like its still trying to force water through the build up. -- would it be possible to pour Mainline or CLR down into the drain in my upper tank ( under the flapper ) to chew away at the build up in the jets?
