Sequel Options
I think that there are various options the Smash Series can go to.
- Smash Ultimate Deluxe
- Smash 6
- Smash 3D
- Smash Spin-off
Let’s start off by saying that the Smash series is a way to promote first party IPs, aside from just being a game. And also, of course, a way to celebrate Nintendo and gaming in general.
So, let’s start with Smash Ultimate Deluxe. I think there potential for that, as there are still many important gaming icon characters and fan-solicited characters that were left off. Like for example, Rayman, Crash, Bomberman, etc… And also Waluigi, Geno, Isaac, etc… Also, may other new modes to enhance the overall experience of Smash can be made. Like, yes, Smash is a fighting game, but it shouldn’t just appeal to competitive play. I think the casual/party play needs to be expanded upon. I feel like Super Smash Bros. Brawl made a better job to appeal to the casual audience (not just in terms of gameplay but in modes). So I still think Smash Ultimate can be worked on more. Also, making a Smash Ultimate Deluxe can give time for devs to work on a new entry. Not just development time, but also creative time for things to innovate really.
Secondly, we have Smash 6. The principal thing about Smash 6 is getting to rework characters movesets for them to be more interesting and to better represent their history. A nice example is the work shown on the “Crazy New Smash Bros: Mario Edition” video by Hidden Machine available on YouTube. I also think that there are many fluf characters and if we want things to be deep, many characters have to be cut. Like it’s nice having all of them, but if we truly focus on which ones are true game icons, many side characters can be left off. This way, the story mode can also be more fleshed out and we could have a new Subspace Emissary type of story.
Thirdly, Smash 3D. Now, this is interesting. Because I don’t know if this should be the next Smash sequel or what. Because the Smash 6 option can be sufficiently different from Ultimate/Ultimate Deluxe that it can be a situation like Mario Kart 8 Deluxe and Mario Kart World, where they coexist at the same time and instead of one replacing the other. But the same could be said about Smash 3D. Like yeah, it’d be a cut of fresh air to have truly new movesets, but… More 2D Smash…? Like it’s getting kinda boring in my opinion. I think making a Smash 3D, kinda like Pokkén Torunament, would be really really refreshing and insteresting. I think that Smash Ultimate could get like an expansion to get new movesets and characters instead of a whole new game, and Smash 3D can be the new entry that coexists with Smash Ultimate Deluxe. Get to focus on just the true gaming icons while still having the principal 2D Smash getting more and more updated to be the definitive version. Have Smash 3D be an open world game to explore in a story mode and have this totally new gameplay. To me, this should be the way to go.
And finally, the Smash Spin-off route. Here, it would be after either of the previous scenarios. To me, ideally, with the Smash 3D scenario. So after getting the Definitive Smash Ultimate Deluxe and Smash 3D. Then we could have some sort of alternative Smash Bros. Where fighting isn’t the focus be maybe other type of gameplay and genres, the sky is the limit… Tbh, don’t know what it should be but if there someone who can think of it it’s Nintendo. Or, well… More specifically, Sakurai…
Those were my takes. What do you think? Let’s discuss about it.
