AIO: Check my Logic
On a vacation with my boyfriend, a man I have known for ten years. We’ve been having a wonderful time. Yesterday he sends me a copy of an update he posted on Facebook. Nice photos, no mention of anyone but him and his journey. I said, hey, you said you don’t use FB anymore. Since you are, can you friend me? He said no. I was puzzled so asked him why not. He said, I’m probably going to delete it. Hmmm, why did you post an update then? [Note: I seldom use FB anymore but occasionally wish friends happy birthday. We used to be friends on FB but he unfriended lots of people two years ago during a bad phase in his mental health.]
After thinking on this for awhile, I told him that this was making me feel uncomfortable. That it felt like he was either hiding my existence or someone else’s. His response was to say “So tell me to delete FB then.” I said, “no. If there’s nothing to hide, then it’s an easy fix. Just friend me.” He told me since I am making a fuss, he’s absolutely not going to friend me. And I told him, “that’s fine but as a result, I’m going to have to end our relationship. Honesty is a hard boundary for me.”
Since then he’s acting like a petulant child and giving me the silent treatment. Am I overreacting in my response?
[Note: I had to burn vacation time, so I invited him on this trip and paid for everything.]
