Need help upgrading from Dell Latitude 5400 for heavy coding (~$300 budget, Europe)
Total budget (in local currency) and country of purchase. Please do not use USD unless purchasing in the US:
Around $300 USD max (approximately 33,000 RSD). Purchasing in Serbia.
Are you open to refurbs/used?
Yes, only considering used/second-hand laptops due to budget constraints. The second-hand market here is extremely overpriced unfortunately.
How would you prioritize form factor (ultrabook, 2-in-1, etc.), build quality, performance, and battery life?
Priority order: Performance > Build Quality > Battery Life > Form Factor. Need something that can handle heavy development workloads (IntelliJ + Docker) without thermal throttling. Currently using a Dell
Latitude 5400 (i5-8365U, 16GB RAM) that overheats constantly and sounds like a jet engine - desperately need an upgrade.
How important is weight and thinness to you?
Not important. I carry it between college and work, but performance and thermals are much more critical than portability.
Do you have a preferred screen size? If indifferent, put N/A.
14" preferred (all my options are 14" FHD IPS screens)
Are you doing any CAD/video editing/photo editing/gaming? List which programs/games you desire to run.
Primary use: Heavy software development work - IntelliJ IDE and Docker containers running constantly. Secondary use: Would like to do light gaming if possible (current laptop gets 10fps in Hollow Knight,
which is unacceptable).
If you're gaming, do you have certain games you want to play? At what settings and FPS do you want?
Light indie games like Hollow Knight at playable framerates (30+ fps minimum at low-medium settings). Gaming is secondary - development performance is the main priority.
Any specific requirements such as good keyboard, reliable build quality, touch-screen, finger-print reader, optical drive or good input devices (keyboard/touchpad)?
Running Arch Linux, so good Linux compatibility is essential. Would appreciate features like fingerprint reader and backlit keyboard, but not dealbreakers.
Leave any finishing thoughts here that you may feel are necessary and beneficial to the discussion.
I've narrowed it down to three ThinkPad options in my budget:
-
ThinkPad T14 Gen 1 (2020) - Ryzen 5 PRO 4650U (6c/12t), 16GB DDR4 3200MHz, 256GB NVMe, WiFi 6, IR camera + fingerprint, 5-6hr battery, 6 month warranty
-
ThinkPad T495 - Ryzen 7 PRO 3700U (4c/8t), 32GB DDR4, 512GB SSD, Radeon Vega Mobile, Windows 11 Pro included
-
ThinkPad E14 Gen 3 - Ryzen 5 5500U (6c/12t), 16GB DDR4, 512GB Samsung NVMe, backlit keyboard, USB-C, 15 day warranty
Main questions: Which handles Docker + IntelliJ best without becoming a space heater? Is the 32GB RAM on the older T495 worth it over the newer 5500U in the E14? Any known thermal issues with the T14 Gen
1's 4650U? Are there other models I should hunt for at this price point?
I've already cleaned out my current laptop thoroughly - the hardware just can't keep up anymore. Really need something that won't throttle constantly and can handle my workload reliably. Any advice from
ThinkPad users would be greatly appreciated!
