Should I switch to a STEM-related field for college?
I'm a Grade 11 HUMSS student, and frankly, I'm beginning to regret my choice. I've always known that STEM courses were in better demand, but I figured that I could push through with my current strand instead because:
- My abilities and interests lie within HUMSS.
- My number one weakness is mathematics. I am decent with science, however.
I originally planned to pursue an English degree and become an ESL teacher, yet now I find myself having second thoughts about it. Throughout my elementary and JHS years, my teachers have suggested that I should pursue the course, and I took their words to heart.
I cannot switch strands, either. Due to unforeseen circumstances, I am now expected to be the breadwinner of the family immediately after I graduate. So it is my responsibility to land a well-paying job after college.
I've been considering two choices. I push through with what I want and hope for the best, albeit risking my future finances. Or another path — switch to the STEM field and take bridging programs, despite my insecurities in mathematics. (My knowledge of bridging programs is quite shallow. So if anyone could clarify further, I'd appreciate it a lot.)
If the second choice is better, what STEM-related course should I major in?
I know I still have some time to figure this out, but I want to start planning as soon as possible. Thank you!
