AITA for asking an author not to write her overweight character as being insecure about her weight?

I was subscribed to a platform that allows authors to share exclusive/easily content with their audience. The audience can comment on the content shared.

The author was writing a new story in a series and posting it cheaper by chapter. On one particular posting, I commented:

“ ‘Like my size didn't matter, didn't pose an obstacle?’ Is her weight going to be an insecurity? With all due respect, l'm really hoping not...”

Her response was:

“No. It's not. But it's a natural reaction for her to have. Please let's not have that argument in my space about that being someone's pet peeve.”

This confused me bc I did not mention anything about it being a pet peeve. So, I responded with:

“Maybe I should've rephrased it to say that I was looking forward to her being confident and that line made me wonder if she would be. I thought I was being careful with the "with all due respect..." (a am conscious about not tearing down authors. I know the flack y'all get. I'll be more mindful of my wording/inquiries in the future. But it's not a pet peeve for me regardless. I was truly simply inquiring...”

Simultaneously, she wrote a public message:

“I'll turn off the comments if I start getting complaints. l've seen this happen in my reader group, and we shut it down quickly. There's nothing wrong with a character having slight insecurities in the back of her mind. If you've read the previous chapters, you know that the FMC is very confident in herself. There's absolutely no fat shaming in this story. This is exactly why I was hesitant to write a plus-sized FMC. You can't mention any natural insecurity without someone pointing out that it bothers them. It's not necessary to tell me what your pet peeve is.”

I felt that she was calling me out and that the situation was spiraling. So I messaged her privately:

“Ma’am, not going to even lie, as a supporter, this is hurting my feelings. I understand that you are trying to get ahead of and are used to public criticism, but I feel like in order to protect yourself from it, you just publicly shamed me. I don’t really appreciate being used as an example. I am a petite woman so I rarely read bbw stories. I just recognize the themes. I definitely could’ve worded my inquiry differently. So, I apologize that my question came off critical. But for the record, I agree with you on all counts. I just don’t think my question warranted it…”

She replied to me privately then copied and pasted her private message into the public forum:

“It was never my intention to publicly shame you. My intention was simply to protect my space. I’m not sure if I’m misreading your tone when you ask me questions, but I’ve found them off-putting more than once. I’ve been incredibly careful while writing this story. Out of all the confidence I’ve built in the previous chapters, that one line made you question whether she’s going to be insecure for the rest of the story? I need to give the character natural reactions; otherwise, she’ll come off as narcissistic. She can’t be overly confident. Even my slimmer characters have natural thoughts and reactions about their weight. And authors write from experience. I am a plus-sized woman. So I'm writing from my own experience. I weigh the same as the character. FMC owns a plus-sized clothing boutique, and she’s an influencer. I don’t know... but I do apologize, and I’ll delete my comments.”

My private reply:

“I did perceive your character as confident. That’s why the line stood out to me. But it wasn’t deep to me. It was a passive inquiry. Authors take all kinds of creative liberties and I see this platform as a space to connect with you directly and as a reader who enjoys your work, I’ll take the opportunity. I also recognize that it is a vulnerable thing that you’re doing by sharing. I guess your reaction caught me off guard. I’ve always been supportive and I can see that most likely I’m in a sea of a bunch of people so you can’t tell friend from foe. But you’re from the same city as me. On principle, simply for that reason alone, I’ll only support you. I’ve never been critical of your work. Especially publicly. And if I ask question, it’s out of curiosity and not to challenge your decisions. Please know that! Thank you for deleting the comment and for allowing us to have this exchange. I hope you have peace writing your stories bc they’re good. I can see that your readers take some of that peace away from the process…”

She thanked me for my support. A few hours later, she posted in the group again to her subscribers directly with this message:

“As for this story, I'm struggling to get back into it. This isn't to shame any readers, but when I get those kinds of comments on my posts, it pulls me out of the story and makes me not want to continue writing it. Give me a couple of days, or maybe even until next week, and I'll try to go back to it. I'm honestly a bit sad about this because I was really enjoying writing their story. However, if I have to defend my work here, then I'll just wait and post it once the story is finished.”

All the readers rallied around her and were discussing how terrible bullying is and that people need not to say bad things, etc. I felt unwelcomed at that point so I unsubscribed bc I assumed we resolved the issue/ what I perceived as a miscommunication hours earlier and that she was setting me up for online bullying.

Recently, I learned that I was blocked on her platform.

AITA?
