New subgenre?

Discussion

Hey everyone,

I’ve been going through a lot of stories under the Kingdom Building tag, and while many of them are great, I’ve noticed they tend to focus mostly on the internal side of ruling. Things like reforming the economy, improving governance, establishing new laws, managing resources, and dealing with the daily struggles of leadership.

That’s fine, but what about the other path to power? the one driven by expansion, war, and ambition?

I’m talking about stories where the protagonist starts with almost nothing(maybe a small barony, a ruined fortress, or a scattered tribe) and through strategy, alliances, and bloody wars, they carve out an empire piece by piece. Where growth doesn’t come from trade reforms or agricultural improvements.

Those kinds of stories have a different energy altogether. They’re about campaigns, sieges, tactical planning, diplomacy, and the harsh reality of ruling through strength.

That’s why I think Royal Road could really use a separate Conquest subgenre (or tag). It would help distinguish stories focused on expansion and warfare from those centered around domestic development.

It’s a distinct flavor of storytelling, one that deserves its own label.

What do you guys think? Would a Conquest subgenre make sense alongside Kingdom Building?
