Purpose of these small turbo engines?

What do you think the reasoning is behind pushing these small turbo engines to power figures that exceed that of V8s? Is it for superficial bragging rights? Increased efficiency? The more reliable engines like the 6.6 L8T and 7.3 Godzilla make in the 400s for both HP and TQ, so why does someone need 300+ in a midsize truck?
