Why the move towards Placards/ recent popularisation?

I'm a bit out of the loop, but why have they gained such a popularity in recent months to years?

Is there much purpose other than ease of swapping plate carrier setups ?

Forgive the stupid question, just genuinely curious as everyone seems to be moving towards them.
