Repayment Plan Advice
Hello all.
I have avoided my student loans since graduating and would really appreciate any and all advice, as I come from a background with no financial guidance.
I currently have two loans, after consolidating in 2021 (I genuinely have no idea why I consolidated other than someone told me to or I had to in order to get IDR or PSLF or something). I was once pursuing PSLF, but it made more financial sense to jump off the non-profit ship, so I no longer qualify for it.
One loan is unsubsidized and ~70k with an interest rate of ~5%.
The other loan is subsidized and ~15k with an interest rate of ~5%.
I’ve made it this long without paying anything on my loans. To be quite honest, I am not interested in ever paying off these loans and would like to pay the smallest amount possible until I’m dead. (Joking, but not really joking - we are not having children, so no one will have to suffer from my debt). I didn’t have family to pay for my college, I got as many scholarships as I could, and the largest hit to my debt was my master’s degree, which was necessary for my career in social services/mental health.
I had a recent job change where I opened my own business/LLC, and while protecting my privacy, I essentially do paid-per-hour work. So, my income is not super predictable due to cancellations, weather, holidays, etc., and often fluctuates. When I don’t work, I don’t get paid. So, time off, sickness, etc., is unpaid. Since I own my own business, I also pay for everything myself - health insurance, office space, business costs, etc.,
I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to move forward with applying for a “payment plan” for my loans? Again, I do not care to actually pay them off - if I’m being honest, I feel really discouraged and frustrated by any hope of paying them off in full/having that be a goal, because when I think of that amount of money and how much I could do with that in my life, like save for retirement or a new home, it makes me sick to think of giving it for an education that other people didn’t have to think twice about paying for. Also, it would just be nice to actually have an emergency savings for the first time. For additional context, my income is comfortable with a bit of extra shopping/spending, but we do not have any savings and I am in credit card debt that I am diligently working to pay off this year. It was my goal to have paid off my credit card before getting hit with my student loan repayment bills, but alas.
If it’s helpful, I’m currently on the IDR and they sent a message this week saying I’d need to start paying ~$700/month (I’m pretty sure this was calculated on my last tax year, not current income since beginning my own business, even though I filled out a separate application letting them know my income changed).
I appreciate any and all advice. Thank you.
