Legion Pro 7i gen10 5080 and Llano V12 No RGB Cooling Pad
Hi all,
I just want to say that this is not sponsored by any brands, unfortunately I had to pay for everything :( Also, it is almost winter here and the room was at 19C, so the results will be different in summer.
I have received the llano v12 cooling pad to replace my previous standard cooling pad. This was a mars gaming mnbc1.
I have run a couple of tests to see if the llano was effective. I have seen a lot of posts and videos stating that this new gen 10 laptops do not improve their temps or performance with cooling pads. The data was captured with HWinfo.
My laptop is a stock pro 7i gen 10 with the ultra 9 275HX and the 5080. I have an underclock of -45mv on the CPU and the GPU is stock. I wish Nvidia would allow us to run the GPU at higher power limits. I am running the latest BIOS and Windows 11.
Before buying the cooler I checked on CAD the internal dimensions of the foam with the 3d model available on Lenovo support website. I got the dimensions from a youtube video. The V12 was the only one that will clear all of the vents. The V10 or the IETS will have a certain level of overlap between the vents and the foam.
I have run the Steel Nomad on the performance and my standard custom mode. I got the same result so I sticked with my custom mode. This is the custom mode I used to run the tests for the Steel Nomad benchmark.
I have run the test on 3 configurations:
- Mars gaming mnbc1 cooling pad
- Llano v12 - 1200rpm
- Llano V12 - 2800rpm
Please see the results below:

There was no difference on the results as for some reason the cpu was running at about 30W on all the tests and the GPU was capped at 175W. However, there is a difference of about 10C on both the GPU and 10C to 15C on the CPU between my old cooler and the llano at full blast. I have run the same test with the computer on performance mode and goth the same result and the same wattage 30-40W on the CPU.
This test was not long enough to get the temps to plateau. So I decided to run Furmark at the same time as Cinebench 2024. I wanted to see how much power the computer was able to draw.
I saw the GPU will only run at 150W if cinebench was running. So, I updated my custom mode to allow the computer to draw up to 290W, which should be enough to thermal throttle the components.
I run the test for about 10 minutes, more or less three and a bit multi-core benchmarks.
These are the surprising results:

With the fans at max speed the laptop is able to run up to 250W of total combined power long term as stated on Lenovo's website. It is quite impressive, my previous laptop would struggle to run at more than 120W combined. The clock speeds were reduced a little bit as well.
The surprising part is that with the llano the laptop run at 284W at 1200rpm after ten minutes of this completely synthetic test. Also, the laptop fans were running at max speed.
With the cooler at max speed there were no signs of throttling and it run at 289-290W all the time. There was almost no clock speed reduction. On top of this, the GPU was even running 10C cooler and the laptop fans were not even running at max speed. I am sure this laptop can go beyond 300W if there are no built in power limits on the motherboard. This might be why the laptop is sent with a 400W.
Also, you can see that with my old cooler, the laptop was just able to complete three runs in 10 minutes, but with the llano it was able to run three and a bit of the fourth one.
I am pretty happy with the performance of the cooler on my pro 7 and would recommend anyone on getting the V12. With the cooler you might be able to run at the same speeds as without it, but with less overall noise.
It is not all perfect, the cooler is pretty bulky and it is a bit more uncomfortable to use the laptop keyboard due to the extra height.
Hope this help someone to made their mind up between buying one laptop brand or another and also to close the myth that coolers do not work on the gen10 laptops. The cooling system of the gen10 laptops is awesome, but they are always happy of extra help.
Please let me know if you have any questions.
