[OC][Guide] Beam angles, trims & drivers for 8–10 ft ceilings (Lotus Tangra examples, Canada)

Disclosure: I’m with Simply Controlled (Canada). This is an educational post—no selling, no prices.

Lots of “one SKU fits all” advice ignores geometry and drivers. Here’s a quick, vendor-specific cheat sheet using Lotus Tangra examples that you can adapt to any quality downlight.

1) Beam math (why spacing changes)

Beam diameter at the work plane ≈ 2 × H × tan(θ/2)

  • H = ceiling height – work-plane height (~30 in / 0.76 m for counters/desks)

Example @ 9 ft (2.74 m) ceilings:

  • H ≈ 2.74 – 0.76 = 1.98 m (6.5 ft)
  • 20° → dia ≈ 2×1.98×tan(10°) ≈ 0.7 m (2.3 ft)
  • 36° → dia ≈ 2×1.98×tan(18°) ≈ 1.3 m (4.2 ft)
  • 50° → dia ≈ 2×1.98×tan(25°) ≈ 1.8 m (5.9 ft)

Rule of thumb spacing: about 0.8–1.2× beam diameter depending on contrast you want.

2) Quick picks for 8–10 ft rooms

  • Ambient: 50° grid, ~6–8 ft spacing
  • Task: 36° over islands/vanities, ~4.5–6 ft
  • Accent: 20° on art/features, ~3.3–4 ft and aim the hotspot

3) Trims (comfort & ceilings)

  • Deep-regressed = less glare in living spaces
  • Trimless (mud-in) = clean plane (plan at drywall)
  • Gimbal / sloped = aim for vaulted or feature walls
  • Round or square to match the design language

4) LED engines & drivers (Canada reality)

  • 5-CCT (2700–5000 K) up to CRI 98 for whole-home flexibility
  • Dim-to-Warm (3000→1800 K) for dining/bedrooms
  • Drivers: Triac 120 V for wall dimmers (e.g., RA3 Sunnata PRO) or 0–10 V 120–347 V for longer runs/commercial panels
  • Look for cETLus, Type IC, Air-Tight, Wet on the label

If you share room dims + a quick sketch, I’ll run the beam math and suggest spacing/options. If mods prefer, I can put any external resources in a top-level comment.
