What could cause an itchy tongue?

Physician Responded

My (27F) tongue has been itching for the past two days. It’s most noticeable when it makes contact with food, water, or air. At times, I also get the sensation like I need to cough, but I never do and it goes away quickly.

I have a suspected corn allergy (pos on skin prick test, neg on blood test, was tolerating corn but removed it from diet out of an abundance of caution) and I ate some fries that were cooked in a mixed vegetable oil that contains corn oil. I had some discomfort on the right side of my throat after that, so I rinsed with warm salt water and took some loratadine out of an abundance of caution, but the symptoms did not progress.

I’m skeptical that that was the cause only because I have been eating that brand of fries without issue even since I went for testing, only just found out that they’re cooked in corn oil two weeks ago, and this is the first time I’ve had this issue since finding out.

Other than that, it’s getting colder where I am and I’ve been dealing with post nasal drip (currently improving with the use of a humidifier). I was outside for an extended period of time Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, and was going from cold to warm and back to cold, so I was thinking it could be a change-of-seasons thing, but I’ve never had this problem before.

I’m seeing a dentist next week and will ask about potential dental causes then, but I was wondering what potential medical causes would be and if there’s anything that I can try to fix this. TIA!
