On screen ruler while creating features?

I need to create features using call-outs (go 370 feet, turn North x degrees x minutes West, go 1230 feet, etc).

Is there any way to have something similar to the measuring tool while I draw these attributes?

Alternatively, can I use the measuring tool, and then turn that shape or line into an attribute?

My Google-fu is failing me on this one, any help is appreciated.
