level.dat is empty, as is level.dat_old

i died in my hardcore world, but i really want it back, and i went to my files to reset the Hardcore to 0, but both my level.dat and leve.dat_old are empty: "There is no application set to open the document 'level.dat'"

anyone know what happened and if i can fix it?
